WCF NewsWichita West High School Hosts West Walk for Cancer

The Wichita West football program hosted the second annual West Walk for Cancer fundraising walk on April 11th at the West High track. The walk benefits the Wichita Cancer Foundation (WCF), which operates to pay insurance premiums for patients battling cancer experiencing financial difficulty. WCF also covers the premium cost for spouses and children.

The track, filled with about one hundred West High students, was flooded with walkers during the windy afternoon, as students participated during their academy time class. This was much to the excitement of the participants and school community, who had their laps tallied by West football coaches. Football player Colton James said, “It was a big thing for the school. Earlier in the day, I heard six teachers talking about it.”

One of the commitments made by the West High football program is to use its platform to better the Wichita Community. This, in turn, provides opportunities for the student-athletes to experience being in a position to make a difference and then choose to do so.

West High Athletic Director Micah Womacks commented, “I am proud of the work of our Pioneer football team in organizing the West Walk for Cancer to support the Wichita Cancer Foundation. Allowing our student-athletes experiences outside of school and sport are things we strive for as an athletic department. In a larger view however, doing what is needed to help those in need, especially those in our own community of Wichita, further encapsulates the good that can and does go on here at Wichita West High School. I am thankful for our Pioneer football program and am proud of the work they are doing to better the community of Wichita.”

As a result of the event, the football program raised over $1,000 for the Wichita Cancer Foundation. Circle of Hope, founded by Dr. Ellen Cooke, sponsored the students and made a $2/lap donation to the Wichita Cancer Foundation.
