WCF Seeks New Partnerships for Ad Astra Fund
Posted: 3/30/2022

What is the Ad Astra Fund?
In 2015 when the Wichita Cancer Foundation was publicly launched, it accepted applications from individuals undergoing cancer care in Sedgwick County. Having achieved adequate support, in 2019 the Board of Directors voted to open applications to Kansans from all 105 counties. Ad Astra per Aspera, the Kansas motto, translates as “To the stars, through difficulties”. We’ve borrowed part of this motto for our statewide expansion initiative. The Ad Astra “to the stars” fund is a strategic program of the Wichita Cancer Foundation. The goal is to bolster support and assistance to counties outside Sedgwick County.
In 2022, WCF is building strategic partnerships in Crawford, Douglas, Ellis, Harvey, Johnson, Lyon, Reno, Riley, Saline, and Shawnee Counties.
How can I participate?
To increase engagement and awareness, we are hosting information meetings about the Ad Astra Fund. We’re excited to partner with community leaders and those passionate about our mission to help Kansans fighting cancer. Contact Wyatt Sheeder, WCF Executive Director, for an invitation to a meeting in your area or for an Ad Astra Partners information packet. wyatt@wichitacancerfoundation.org, 316-932-2108
How is the Ad Astra Fund Making Kansas better?
Since its founding as a 501c3 nonprofit, WCF has helped more than 300 Kansans from 22 counties. Record assistance in 2021 exceeded $183,000. WCF pays insurance premiums for those whose cancer care has caused financial hardship. By maintaining insurance coverage, recipients are ensured access to care and treatment when they need it most. 100% of recipients surveyed reported decreased financial and emotional distress as a result of WCF assistance. 98% reported WCF assistance positively affected their families and/or caregivers. Many recipients have re-entered the work force, citing our assistance as a contributing factor. The expanding reach of our assistance program calls more community leaders to action in support of Kansans fighting cancer!
